Recruitment and selection

Great recruitment starts with job titles and job descriptions. They make sure that everyone’s clear about what’s needed and that the potential new recruit knows that this is the job for them.

 

There is now a huge variety of options to choose from when it comes to attracting applicants. If you advertise, then your advertising copy needs to sell your brand and your job.

 

Design the right process, ask the right questions and get the right person. Easy? Here are a few thoughts.

  • When recruiting for an administrator, one business I worked with asked for people with a specific typing speed. When it decided to test them it found that most had over-estimated by up to a third.

 

  • If you ask people about imaginary situations the chances are that you’ll get imaginary answers. Try: “Tell me about a time when you had to… “  That will make sure that people talk to you about something that they have actually done.  And the best predictor of what someone will do in the future is usually what they did in the past.

 

  • If its something that you can watch someone do, then don’t ask them about it. Watch them do it whether it’s writing a letter, painting a door or walking a dog.

One you’ve found your new recruit you’ll need to make sure that they have the right contract and get the paperwork.

 

And at every step of the way you should be thinking about how you can ensure equality and promote diversity as well as avoiding all the different types of unlawful discrimination and complying with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
